The GBT
The Pride and Joy of the Green Bank Facility is the new Green Bank Telescope,
affectionately referred to by the locals as the GBT (which should really stand for
Great Big Telescope). The 100 meter diameter GBT replaces the original dish
that gracefully collapsed of old age about fifteen years ago. As are almost all things
built in West Virginia nowadays, the GBT's existence is due to the political
weight of WV Senator Robert Byrd, after whom it is officially named.
